The Pancha Mahabuta Series is my personal interpetation of the hinduistic five elements.

The series consists of the following works:

Center: "Akasha" (the Fifth Element)

Top: "Prithvi" (The god of Earth)

Right: "Pavana" (The god of Wind)

Bottom: "Jala" (The god of Water)

Left: "Tejas" (The god of Fire)

The Pancha Mahabuta Series was one of personal favorites to create. Though I was raised in a Catholic home, I enjoy studying different religions & came across the ancient Hindu belief of the five elements: Akasha, Prithvi, Pavana, Jala, & Tejas.

Akasha, also known as the fifth element, is believed to be the source of the other four elements, giving 'birth' to the gods of Earth (Prithvi), Wind (Pavana), Water (Jala) & Fire (Tejas). In the creation of these pieces, I incorporated each of the elements into the paintings. Tejas was burnt with a torch, Pavana was created with the use of a fan to create the wind painting, Jala was painted using copious amounts of water, & Prithvi has soil incorporated into the paint. Akasha comes very close to my personal belief of an uncaused cause (or God). To me, Akasha is the reaction that had no action to cause it's being. Personally, Akasha is how I view what God looked like at the beginning of time. Some might call it the Big Bang. It is what you want it to be.

If to every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, should not our actions thus be compassionate?

In this series, I wanted to explore Isaac Newton's Third Law of Motion, "To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction". I am fascinated by science & the self revelations we realize thru discovery of our surroundings.

Newton's Third law is one I quote often as I believe not only does it apply to our physicality in this universe, but also to our humanity and spirituality

Comet Rising

Comet Rising" was inspired by my love of Sci-fi. As a child, my Father, Lee Spencer, instilled in me a deep love of science fiction & I believe my art is influenced by this love of the unknown, uncharted, & yet to be explored. Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around my Father & I, sneaking downstairs at midnight to watch shows like Blake's 7, Red Dwarf & Doctor Who. He always inspired me to 'think outside the box' , pursue my dreams, learn something new, & live to my fullest potential. Though he has been gone physically for over a decade now, I know his spirituality lives on in my memories.

Blood Falls & Arterial Motion

I created "Blood Falls" (Right) years as a tribute to the events that transpired on September 11th. To me it symbolizes both tragady & rebirth. On 9-11, so much blood fell from the skies that we as a country cried. But whenever there is great loss, great goodness is soon to be found. For me blood is symbolic of life's renewal also. We joined together as a country to fight, to cry, to mourn, & to give. People banded together after the tragedy. Pride of country emerged. How many of us, gave blood at the Red Cross in the following weeks or donated to a worthy cause? The American Spirit may take a beating, but it's heart continues to pump & rebuild.

I created Arterial Motion (Left) shortly after I created the piece called 'Blood Falls'. Both pieces were made during the Summer of 2007, almost five years after the tragic events of September 11th. Although many years have passed, the images of that day are still very fresh in my mind. To me, 'Arterial Motion' , represents the blood boiling in our veins. It says how life continues to go on, how we continue to live, & how the spirit cannot be killed.

We are Animal

If one slices open a cow, a pig, a chicken, a dog, a human.... after the outer skin is removed.... do we not all look the same? When cut open, doesn't every animal bleed? Doesn't every animal feel pain? I question that as a human animal; doesn't our humanity dictate that we should treat other animals with compassion?
